Overview

On 12th March 2008 a workshop was held at the University of the West

of Scotland in Paisley entitled "The Structure of the Heaviest Elements".

The aim of the workshop was to cover experimental and theoretical topics

relating to the heaviest elements including

  • The structure of the transfermium nuclei
  • The structure of the superheavy elements
  • Decay modes of the heaviest elements
  • Astrophysical implications

A key focus of the workshop was how the study of the transfermium

nuclei can inform the structure of the superheavy elements.

The workshop was attanded by 24 participants.

Key questions

The key questions to be addressed are

  1. What is the structure of the superheavy elements?

  2. How the study of the transfermium nuclei can inform the
    structure of the superheavy elements

More specifically

  • What is predictive power of theory for the transfemiums
and the superheavies? Are extrapolations reliable?

  • What are experimental uncertainties? What data can be
safely used by theorists to benchmark modern density functionals?

  • What new experimental data are needed? Is
there any guidance from theory in that respect?

  • What are the crucial questions regarding the structure
    of the transfermiums?
